Warning issued with Beef Week Queen coronation

BEEF Week in Casino was officially opened on Saturday night with the crowning of the Beef Week Queen at an entertaining dinner night at the RSM Club.

About 300 guests were on hand as Nationals MP Chris Gulaptis announced Sarah Yeo of Monaltrie as the 2013 Beef Week Queen.

The veterinary nurse, who works at Casino Veterinary Clinic, was crowned ahead of Samantha Chilton, Samantha Fletcher and Kelly Lee-Knight.

"I am speechless so good luck with asking me questions," Ms Yeo, 21, said when asked what the win meant for her.

"I had been wanting to enter (the Beef Week Queen competition) for quite a few years.

"My boss pushed me into it and I see it as a huge challenge."

Ms Yeo, who is representing the Charolais breed, said she was looking forward to getting out amongst the wider community and began her commitments by attending the Beef Meets Reef festival in Evans Head yesterday.

Beef Week president Stuart George, thanked sponsors and participants before issuing an ominous warning for the future of the event.

"Sponsors are down by 25% this year and our concern is about how long this can continue," he said.

"While we do have new sponsors on board we have lost others."

Concerns for the future of the event were put aside for the night at least as guests danced to the music of Groove Inc.

Also at Saturday's dinner, Barbara Armfield, well known as the voice of Beef Week, was presented with a lifetime membership to the event.

"I wish you all the success for Beef Week 2013," she said.

"And I thank you from the bottom of my heart."
