When Arnold met Mary: a tale to make heart flutter

FOR 61 years Arnold Vayo has been writing Valentine's Day cards for his wife Mary, and he still loves her and celebrates the occasion as much as ever.

Arnold dropped into The Northern Star office this week to see if we would be interested in a fairy tale love story for our readers.

In the text of a card to Mary he re-tells the story of how they met, at a cinema in Massachusetts in November 1953 when Mary was just 15 years old.

"I asked 'can I sit next to you?' You said 'no'," he wrote.

But he did anyway and after promising not to "get funny", he made a bold declaration.

"I'm going to marry you," he told her.

Without missing a beat she replied: "That's what you think."

But fate made a liar of Mary and the couple were married on June 22, 1958.

"It's been a long time and five children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren later and 61 Valentine's Days," he said.

"We still feel the beat of each other's heart. Thank you, Mary, for the millions of beats we've shared and for God for allowing it to occur."
