ARSENAL are said to have been left crippled by Mesut Ozil's astronomical wages - but he's made to look poor by Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona superstar is far and away the highest-paid player on the planet, taking home A$13.5million per MONTH before tax - nearly double that of rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi penned a new deal in November 2017 where he earns around $3.1m per week - according to the latest annual salary report from L'Equipe.

Meanwhile, famous frenemy Ronaldo rakes in $7.5m per month from Juventus, incredibly just 56 per cent of what Messi earns in Spain.

Arsenal were left in a conundrum in last month's transfer window, with no money to buy new players.

One of the reasons is thought to be their devastating wage bill - topped by Ozil.

The Gunners had hoped to sell the former Germany international but were unable to find any potential buyers, with his enormous $639,000-a-week pay-packet a possible stumbling block.

But his $2.5m monthly wages are utterly dwarfed by Messi - who earns FIVE times as much.

Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann sits third in the world's best-paid players with a monthly salary of $5.3m.

Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar comes fourth on $4.9m - with teammate Kylian Mbappe ($2.7m) in ninth.

Luis Suarez sits fifth on $4.5m ahead of La Liga pal Gareth Bale on $4m.

But Barcelona flop Philippe Coutinho sits seventh on £2m-a-month - level with fellow underwhelming star Alexis Sanchez of Manchester United.

Former Liverpool star Coutinho has been slammed by Barcelona fans a year on from his $265m move to the Nou Camp.
