Young dancer leaps ahead of the pack with high OP ranking

A WARWICK dancer who hit the studio six times a week, spent nights doing assignments and cut back on her social life still could not believe her eyes when her OP score was revealed.

Maddie Farrell, 17, says her OP score of 4 helped show the value in artistic subjects and demonstrated choosing academic options was not the only path to success.

She was one of four students at Assumption College to achieve an OP 1-5, new data has revealed.

"Many people underestimate the arts and think you have to go for the hard subjects but that's not the case," Maddie said.

"As long as you work hard you can really do anything."

Maddie did feel pressure to undertake difficult maths and science subjects, but she knew those options were not the right fit for her.

She instead opted to study drama, dance, religion, English, biology and maths A.

"I knew I wanted to pursue dance as a career option but in order to do that you had to do well at schooling as well," she said.

"Who knows? Dance is a very tough industry so you always have to have a back-up."

Dance was not a walk in the park, with both theory and practical components.

Her hard work paid off, as she was the first to achieve a VHA 10 for dance at both Assumption College and the Brisbane School of Distance Education, the organisation through which she studied dance.

"It was so stressful but it was worth it in the end," she said.

"My goal after studying would be to make it into a contemporary company."

Maddie moved to Brisbane last week where she will study a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in dance performance at the Queensland University of Technology.
